City of Bloomington
Announces Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District
On May 23, 2006 the Bloomington
Area Arts Council hosted a public forum to announce the Bloomington
Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD). This district will be located
downtown, from Seventh Street to the north to Third Street to the
south, and W. Kirkwood Ave to the west to Washington Street to the
east. It will feature a thriving arts, music, theater and museum
scene anchored by cultural institutions, growing commerical and
retail businesses, restaurants and residences. Mayor Mark Kruzan
said BEAD will help broaden public access to the arts, foster those
that make their living with their craft, and ensure sustained growth
in Bloomington's creative industries for their long term economic
development. For more information, visit the City
of Bloomington website.
Bloomington One of Four Indiana Cities Praised
for Quality of Life
A new study prepared by Expansion Management magazine recommends
four Indiana cities on a list of 362 metro areas that would make
good expansion sites for mid-sized business as determined by its
"Quality of Life Quotient." The metro areas of Bloomington and Lafayette
received five-star ratings, the highest award possible. The metro
areas of Evansville and Fort Wayne were also honored with four-star
ratings.
The "Quality of Life Quotient" looked at median family income,
per capita income and per capita disposable income levels, combined
with cost of living adjustments, state and local tax burdens, family
and individual poverty levels, and unemployment rates. The study
also considered crime rates, schools and traffic.
Bloomington earned its highest ranking at 22nd because of its low
crime rate. Bloomington also ranked 27th for spouse employment.
The complete list can be found at www.expansionmanagement.com.

Yelena: Photographer of Joy
"Yelena: Photographer of Joy" is a woman-owned Bloomington portrait
photography business specializing in whimsical, playful and joyful
portraits in nature or at clients' homes. The business provides
an imaginative alternative to formal, posed studio portraits. The
company was started in January of 2005 by Yelena Yahontova, who
is originally from Minsk, Belarus, but who has lived in Bloomington
since 2002.
Yahontova is an award-winning photographer and costume stylist.
She offers imaginative portraits for everyone: families, babies,
expectant mothers, children, high school seniors, couples, people
with their pets, musicians, dancers, models, etc. She prefers photographing
in nature where her subjects feel relaxed and inspired, rather than
in a studio.
A special distinction of "Yelena: Photographer of Joy" is that Yelena
provides a costume and accessories collection for both adults and
children to have fun with during the photo session. Her collection
includes 19th century-style dresses, fairy gowns, and butterfly
and angel wings, among other items. Yahontova captures the uniqueness
of each individual and the love and tenderness between family members.
Yelena's work transforms women into goddesses, children into princes
and princesses and angels; above all, she creates portraits that
are works of art.
Yahontova's work has been exhibited in numerous places throughout
Bloomington in 2006: Waldron Arts Center, Uptown Café, Roberts Photographic
Equipment, tutto bène Wine Café. This month (June) Yahontova
has 5 exhibits:
- Summer House (window display at Victoria Towers building on
Kirkwood)
- Theater Café on Kirkwood
- Bloomingfoods East
- La Torre Mexican restaurant (East side, across from Hobby Lobby)
- El Norteno Mexican restaurant (downtown, off of the square,
in the old Princess Theater building)
The work of "Yelena: Photographer of Joy" has received awards from
several major national photo contests. It has also been featured
in several local publications, including twice in Bloomington's
newspaper The Herald-Times. To learn more, visit Yelena's website.

Be a Good Multitasker
Entrepreneurs must be effective multitaskers. Keep a log of all
your activities throughout the day: incoming and outgoing phone
calls, interrruptions, meetings, and breaks. Watch for patterns—when
customers usually call, when you attend regular meetings, and so
on.
With this information you can arrange more flexible activities
around those with hard deadlines. If you're observant, you'll also
discover periods when interruptions are rare. These are ideal times
to take care of routine tasks, catch up on business correspondence,
and plan work schedules. Learn
