Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Announces New Host Relationship with Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington
Officials at Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington announced that the college has entered into an agreement to serve as the host for the South Central Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

The South Central Indiana SBDC works in support of the development and growth of entrepreneurs and serves Bartholomew, Browne, Decatur, Greene, Jackson, Jennings, Monroe, Owen and Lawrence counties.

John Whikehart, Chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington, says the opportunity to host the Small Business Development Center aligns with the mission of Ivy Tech and is appropriate given the state of Indiana’s economic development plans. “Ivy Tech–Bloomington made responding to community workforce and economic development needs part of our strategic plan several years ago. The state of Indiana has recently released a Strategic Economic Development Plan that encourages the alignment of education in Indiana with workforce preparation. I can think of no better culmination of our regional mission and the state’s strategic plan than to host the local Small Business Development Center.”

Brian Kleber, Regional Director of the SBDC, says that this new relationship with Ivy Tech–Bloomington will enable the organization to continue growing and to remain a national leader in innovative services to entrepreneurs. “We are very excited about this new relationship and the opportunities it brings to our clients, existing partners, and our internal operations. Our goal is to build the very best SBDC for the community. This partnership helps us take the next step.”

The SBDC offices will remain at its current location in the IU Research Park at the Showers Building, 501 N. Morton Street, Suite 106.

Small Business Spotlight

South Central Indiana's area economy is made up of many unique small businesses which often are overlooked. Each month learn about a local small business that you might have not known about!

NR Hiller Design, Inc.
NR Hiller Design, Inc. is a woman-owned Bloomington furniture and cabinetmaking business that specializes in late nineteenth and early twentieth century styles. The company was started in 1995 (as NR Hiller Design) by Nancy Hiller, who did her training in traditional furniture craftsmanship in England, having grown up there from the age of twelve.

The company does primarily residential work, all of which is highly customized and pays great attention to the character of each client's particular home.

Examples of work done over the past year have included a faithful reproduction of a Shaker table from Old Chatham, New York; cabinets for the kitchen of a Victorian house on the National Register of Historic Places; a kitchen using leaded glass and hardware salvaged from a 1930s farmhouse on Indianapolis's north side; milk-painted cabinets for a Colonial Revival home; and a set of cabinets in quartersawn white oak with hand-forged iron strap hinges, inspired by the work of English architect C.F.A. Voysey, for a Tudor Revival house in Elm Heights.

The woodworking skills possessed by the employees facilitate an extraordinary level of customization in kitchen cabinet construction. Recent clients have, for example, specified traditional wooden runners and kickers for their cabinet drawers. Drawers can be made with handcut dovetails upon request. Genuine traditional butt hinges are standard.

The work of NR Hiller Design, Inc. has been featured in several national publications, including Fine Woodworking, American Bungalow, and Old-House Interiors magazines.
