Charlotte Zietlow Named SBA's National
"Women's Business Champion of the Year"

The U.S. Small Business Administration has awarded Champion Awards to nine small business owners and small business backers from across the country in recognition of their outstanding achievements on behalf of small business.

Bloomington's own Charlotte Zietlow is one of nine entrepreneurs across the United States recognized for their superior accomplishments, with Charlotte netting the title "Women's Business Champion of the Year." After successfully starting, growing and selling her own business, Charlotte continues to work tirelessly with Middle Way House to promote economic opportunities for formerly abused women in the community. Her most notable successes to-date are the Confidential Document Destruction and Middleway Food Works.

The National Champion Awards will be presented on Monday, April 23 at an evening reception in the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Reception Room as part of the 2-day annual National Small Business Week Celebration. Each year, National Small Business Week honors the small business accomplishments of individuals and business owners.

"Charlotte serves as a mentor to other small business owners throughout the Midwest and the nation," said SBA Regional Administrator Patrick Rea. "She represents today's small business leaders showing dedication and determination to succeed in the marketplace."

Congratulations, Charlotte! For the complete article, see PRNewswire.

Survey Looks at What Motivates Entrepreneurs
A survey by Purdue University researchers reveals some surprising statistics about what really motivates entrepreneurs to start their businesses. The survey of 101 Indiana entrepreneurs shows that they are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial activity if they have a major big box retailer in their communities. It also showed that entrepreneurs were less inclined to start a business if they owned a home. Those with a net worth of $50,000 to $75,000 were more likely to start a business than those worth more.

Purdue University Researcher Maria Marshall says attempting to develop a business plan also motivated entrepreneurs to take the plunge into business ownership. For the complete article, please see Inside Indiana Business.

Tips of the Month
Using E-mail Lists to Find New Customers
As small companies search for new customers in order to grow, many may be tempted to rent or purchase a list of e-mail addresses. Advertising to a ready-made list can be appealing for its low cost, immediacy and wide-reach. But beware—it's not always a good idea, and those who prospect via e-mail can actually do more harm to themselves than good. For more visit Inc.com.
