Zietlow Receives National Small-Business Honor
Charlotte Zietlow has been named 2007 Women in Business Champion of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Zietlow was nominated for the award by the South Central Indiana Small Business Development Center, director Brian Kleber said.

Zietlow won at the state district, Midwest regional, and national level.

“This is recognition that women in business need a champion,” Zietlow said. “I’m very grateful and think it’s amazing, quite frankly.”

The nomination highlighted Zietlow’s history, ranging from her experience co-founding gourmet cooking supply shop Goods for Cooks to her work with SEED Corp., a local nonprofit group that helps small businesses, to her work with Middle Way House, which helps abused women.

She has also been named Woman of the Year by the city, and been a Sagamore of the Wabash recipient from former Gov. Frank O’Bannon.

“For more than four decades, Charlotte’s has been a loud and true voice for the betterment of all women and her community as a whole,” her nomination read.

Zietlow received her award in April at a reception in the U.S. Department of State. She’ll be recognized locally as well.

Local Firm to Build Navy a Portable Field ‘Supercomputer’
MNB Technologies announces the receipt of a U.S. Navy research contract to develop a new class of field-portable "supercomputers" based on conventional notebook computers equipped with plug-in reconfigurable accelerators and a revolutionary new use model.

Sponsored by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Pawtuxent River, Maryland, this contract will result in a new class of high-performance computer that is equally at home in both military and civilian applications. The new system will capture the power of high-performance reconfigurable computing while maintaining very reasonable overall cost by heavily using commercial off-the-shelf systems and major components. The result will be better and faster decisions, improved mission planning, and higher quality training.

This R&D project is partially funded by a grant from the State of Indiana, Indiana 21st Century Science & Technology Fund. For more details, see The Herald-Times.

Tips of the Month

The Correct Way to Check References
Checking applicants' references is one of the most important steps in the hiring process. Ask specific questions based on what you learned about the applicant in the interview. For example: How did the employee contribute to projects mentioned in the interview? Pay attention to neutral or negative comments from references. Lukewarm comments or half-hearted praise speak volumes. Ask the former employer if they would hire the person back. If they hesitate, move on to the next applicant. To find out more about recruiting, visit allbusiness.com.
