Bloomington Rates High Nationally
in Life Sciences Employment

Bloomington is in the top 10 percent nationally for overall employment related to medical devices and equipment, according to a recent study.

The report, released last week by Battelle Memorial Institute and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, evaluated employment in the life sciences industry by metropolitan statistical areas.

It examined overall employment, as well as four subsectors: drugs and pharmaceuticals; medical devices and equipment; agriculture feedstock and chemicals; and research, testing and medical laboratories.

The study showed the Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) ranked 31st out of the 361 MSAs included in the study for national employment related to medical devices and equipment. For more information, check out the article in The Herald Times.

Small Business Spotlight

South Central Indiana's area economy is made up of many unique small businesses which often are overlooked. Each month learn about a local small business that you might have not known about!

Walnut Grove Spring Water Compay
The Walnut Grove Spring Water Company is a local, privately-owned bottler of domestic premium natural spring water. The legendary Walnut Grove Spring was discovered only recently by Duane & Leslie Smith, career bi-coastal business professionals and Hoosier natives, during the founding of their retirement business—Persimmon Valley Farms.

The company is on the verge of the inaugural release of its fine, glass-bottled pure spring water. Already, nearly a dozen fine dining establishments in Bloomington have signed on to carry the water. The first cases of Walnut Grove Spring Water will be available for sale in these establishments by April 1, 2007. The company plans to expand the bottled product’s distribution to other local and national markets in the coming months, but feels it important to find success in its hometown first.

Currently Walnut Grove Spring Water is available in Bloomington and most of southern Indiana in 5-gallon home/office delivery bottles for home and office water coolers. Crystal Pure of Bloomington and Clearwater Revival of Bedford are the primary distributors of the local water, and the 5-gallon bottles are already placed in nearly 250 homes and businesses in the area.

Walnut Grove Spring Water also has a progressive vision. Top priority is given to utilizing local resources, services, and people at every opportunity. Top management are locally raised and educated. Additionally, the company is partnering with developmentally disabled workers through Bloomington's Stone Belt organization to aid in the manufacturing process. The company has a strong commitment to remaining privately-held to preserve its commitment of being a truly socially responsible company.

The company couldn’t be happier to be headquartered in the Bloomington area, and looks forward to sharing this local treasure with the area’s residents before introducing it to a national audience.

Tips of the Month

How Good is Your Web Site?
What makes the difference between a good and a bad web site? One key component is the navigation bar. Make sure your navigation uses colors that reflect your company logo or other company graphics. Use simple foreground and background color combinations with high contrast so that text is easy to read and loads quickly. You should also have a text-only version of your navigation at the bottom of your page for visually impaired users, search engines, and users who want to easily navigate at the bottom of a long page.
